Filter, search and views on Work

3 min read

On a board’s Work screen, search and quick filters narrow the cards, a saved view brings back a setup you use often, and each column reads more of its cards. None of them changes a count.

Filter and search #

The controls sit above the columns of Work (The Work board):

  • Search work items: narrows cards by text or key. Jira reads the words as you, over the board’s own work items.
  • Blocked, Past SLE, Committed, Not committed, Unmapped status: quick filters you can combine. The view can add more. Clear filters turns them off.
  • Non-matching: Fade dims the cards a filter leaves out, Hide removes them.
  • Lanes: on a board with lanes, Shown draws the board’s lanes, and Hidden draws the columns without them.
  • Density: Comfortable draws each card on several lines, Compact on one line, and Dense on one smaller line.

While a quick filter is on, the WIP strip adds In WIP under the filter with the WIP it matches. The board’s own WIP figures do not change.

Choose a saved view #

The Saved views menu lists Default view and the views you can see. Save as a new view… keeps what Work shows now. Manage views… opens Work views. An inactive license holds both.

Read more of the board #

Work usually reads unfinished work first, then done work, newest first. The footer’s (i) “How these cards are ordered” names the order of the view you chose. The footer counts what is loaded, such as “40 of 120 work items loaded, all the unfinished work among them.” The footer has no control of its own.

  • Show more at the end of a column, or of a column’s cell in a lane, reads the next work items there, and nothing else on the board. Its tooltip says so.
  • See older work items at the end of the Done column reads older finished work items there.

Done work you don’t see yet has not been read. It is not missing.

If something looks off #

  • “No work item matches the current filter”: turn a quick filter off, select Clear filters, or choose another view.
  • “No work item matches this search”: select Clear search.
  • “Search: Jira cannot read these words. Change them.”: change the search words.
  • “Jira did not check every work item, so the search shows none.” or “… so the quick filters show none.”: narrow the search, or open Work again.
  • “… names something Jira does not show you, something that no longer exists, or a saved filter the app cannot follow, so it matches no work item.”: turn that quick filter off, or ask a Board owner to change it.
  • “The saved view you chose is no longer available, so Work shows the built-in view.”: choose another view in Saved views.
  • “The view you chose could not be opened” or “The view this board opens Work with is no longer available …”: choose another view in Saved views.
