Source & scope tells a board which Jira work to read. Here you rename the board, change the work it reads, and take a saved filter that changed in Jira. On Advanced, Configure also shows the site rules that bind the board.
Open a board’s configuration #
- Open the board from Boards.
- Select Configure, then a group in the list.
Configure opens on Source & scope. The list holds six groups: Source & scope, Flow & time, Layout & cards, Policies & agreements, Access and Backup and restore. Each group shows a short line under its name that says what it holds, such as “Board name, and the spaces, Jira filter or JQL it reads”. Open board, at the top, takes you back to Work. Backup and restore is explained in Configuration backup and restore.
Change what the board reads #
Where the work comes from has three kinds. The board keeps one at a time. A board created from a Jira board reads that board’s saved filter, so it shows Saved filter here.
| Kind | What you choose |
|---|---|
| Space | Up to 50 spaces you can browse in Jira |
| Saved filter | A saved filter Jira shares with you |
| JQL | A query that Jira checks as you |
The Source preview counts the work items that match and that you can see. It says when it counted them (“Evaluated” and a time). It also gives a sample of keys and the resolved query. A source above 10,000 work items cannot be stored, and the preview says so in red.
Each warning in the preview starts with a Warning lozenge:
- If no matching work item is completed yet, the board is still valid. Throughput, cycle time and forecasts stay empty until one is.
- If the query leaves out every completed work item, the board can never measure throughput or forecast. Include completed work, and hide it in a saved view of Work instead.
- A warning can also say that a status may be missing from the statuses you map, because Jira did not give the workflow of every space.
- Change the Board name or the source.
- Check the count in the Source preview.
- Select Apply source change.
- In the dialog, read What the board will read, then select Change the source.
When the count is cut short, the dialog says “At least” before the number. A new name alone is saved at once, with no dialog.
The dialog “Change what Payments reads?” says what follows: every figure on the board is recalculated from the new source, for everyone who opens it. Until the recalculation ends, the board shows what it read before. A line under the form follows the recalculation and says how it ended.
Take a changed saved filter #
A board copies a saved filter’s query when you apply the source. If someone later edits that filter in Jira, or a saved filter your JQL names, the board keeps the old query and warns you that the saved filter changed after a time it names.
- Select Apply source change. You change nothing in the form first.
- In “Take the filter’s current query for Payments?”, select Take the current query.
The board is then recalculated in the same way as for a new source.
See what needs a look #
A group in the list carries a lozenge only while it needs one. Needs attention marks Flow & time while work items sit in statuses the flow does not place yet. Data incomplete marks a flow that could not be read.
A board’s Overview ends with one line about the defaults you kept, and a link to review them (A board’s Overview).
Site rules and reasons #
On the Advanced edition, site rules and templates can bind a board. Configure then shows a Governance entry, and some saves ask for a Reason for the change or are locked. Changing the source never asks for a reason. Both are explained in Governance and reasons for a change.
If something looks off #
- “You can read this configuration but not change it. A board owner can.”: ask a Board owner to make the change.
- “Nothing to save: the name and the source are the ones stored.”: change the name or the source first.
- “This needs a board name and a source the preview admits.”: enter a name, and fix the source until the preview counts it.
- “A board reads at most 50 spaces. Remove one to choose another.”: remove a space you no longer need.
- “The license is inactive”, above the groups, and “This installation has no active license, so nothing here can be changed.” in each group: the board stays readable, and nothing stored is changed; see Standard and Advanced editions.
- “Waiting for Atlassian to confirm this site’s license, so nothing here can be changed.”: the app waits for Atlassian’s answer about the license; try again later.
