Risk automation

3 min read

Risk automation holds one setting for the whole site: the percentile of past work that risk rules compare with. It decides how cautious the finish and wait figures in an alert are, so every team reads them on one scale.

i
Risk automation is part of the Advanced edition (Standard and Advanced editions). The rules themselves: Risk rules. On a Standard site, Administration does not list this section, and a saved link to it opens About the Advanced edition.

Open the section #

Open Administration, then select Risk automation in the section list. Its hint reads “Percentile of past finishes and usual waits”. The page holds one card, Risk automation, with one field, Percentile.

Choose the percentile #

  1. Under Percentile, choose 50th percentile, 70th percentile, 85th percentile or 95th percentile. The 85th percentile is in force until you save another.
  2. Select Save. The flag says “The risk automation percentile is saved.”

The change is recorded in the audit trail with the percentile before and after.

What the percentile changes #

The percentile shapes two kinds of figures that alerts state. The usual wait is also the one the Between stages card of a value stream shows (Value streams). The rule editor’s preview states its figures at the same percentile. The two figures:

Figure in an alert What the percentile decides
“85th-percentile finish of comparable past cycles” When a work item would finish, judged by how long comparable past cycles took
“Usual wait (85th percentile of timed handoffs)” How long work usually waits after a handoff into a board

A percentile is not a chance. The 85th percentile finish says that 85% of comparable past cycles finished by that point. It is not a probability that this work item will. A higher percentile gives later finishes and longer usual waits.

For example, Dana keeps the 85th percentile. An alert on Checkout that states a finish then reads “85th-percentile finish of comparable past cycles”: 85% of comparable past cycles on Checkout finished by that date. If she chooses the 95th percentile, the same alert names a later date, because it waits for 95% of them.

The alert names the percentile you chose, so its reader knows how cautious the finish is.

The setting changes what rules compute, never who may read an alert. People keep seeing only the alerts on work items they can read.

How it relates to risk rules #

Each rule’s owner decides what the rule watches and when it raises an alert, on the rule’s own page (Risk rules). This page sets the one percentile those rules share. The page has no export.

If something looks off #

  • “Nothing to save: this is the percentile in force.”: choose another percentile first.
  • “The risk automation percentile may not have been saved.”: reload the page and read the percentile in force.
  • About the Advanced edition opens in place of this page: the site runs the Standard edition, which holds no risk automation.

Who can open it #

Only a Jira administrator can open Administration and change the percentile.
