Installation

2 min read

Advanced Boards is installed once per Jira site, by a Jira administrator, from the Atlassian Marketplace. After a short setup, everyone on the site finds the app in Jira’s own menus, under the same name.

Before you install #

  • Who installs: a Jira administrator of the site. Other people can use the app once it is installed.
  • Which edition: Standard or Advanced. Your Marketplace license decides it, and both editions are the same app. See Standard and Advanced editions.
  • What it stores: identifiers, dates, status changes, the results it computes, your board settings and an audit trail, with people kept as Jira account ids. It never stores the text of your work items. See Data and Security.

Install the app #

  1. Find Advanced Boards: Kanban, Analytics & Forecasts in the Atlassian Marketplace, or in Jira’s own app search.
  2. Start the install and choose your Jira site.
  3. Read Jira’s consent panel. It lists what the app may do on your site. Accept it to go on.
  4. Wait until Jira says the app is installed.

The app then prepares its own storage. Its pages stay hidden in Jira until that setup has finished. If you don’t see them yet, wait a moment and reload the page.

Open Administration first #

In Jira’s Manage apps, the app’s Get started button opens Administration. You can also open it from the Apps section of Jira’s settings, under Advanced Boards.

Administration starts with the block Quick start: administration. It stays until you select Dismiss. Check the License and editions card on the Overview: it shows your edition and its state, such as “Advanced · Active”, or “Advanced · Trial” during an evaluation. See Administration overview and license.

i
Administration is for Jira administrators. Other people don’t see it in the app’s navigation. Everything that belongs to one board lives in that board’s Configure section.

What the app adds to Jira #

Where in Jira What you find
Apps → Advanced Boards The app itself: Home, Boards, Risk, Reports and, for administrators, Administration
Jira settings → Apps → Advanced Boards Administration for this site
A space’s sidebar → Advanced Boards “Boards in this space”: the boards that read this space (Boards in this space)
A work item → Advanced Boards The work item panel: the boards that count the work item, and its age
A dashboard → Add gadget Four gadgets: “Advanced Boards: WIP” (Advanced Boards: WIP), “Advanced Boards: Throughput” (Advanced Boards: Throughput), “Advanced Boards: Work Item Age” (Advanced Boards: Work Item Age) and “Advanced Boards: Forecast” (Advanced Boards: Forecast)

Jira shows the work item panel only after someone adds it. A person who may edit a work item adds it to that one work item. A Jira administrator can show it on every work item from the panel’s own menu. See The work item panel.

Who can do what after installing #

  • Creating boards: by default, “Every licensed user on this site may create a board.” An administrator can narrow this. See Permissions and access.
  • A new board: only its creator, as Board owner, and Jira administrators can open it at first. The Board owner adds other people. See Board access and roles.
  • What people see: every count covers only the work items that person can see in Jira. See What each person sees.

Consent and later updates #

The first time a person opens the app, Jira may ask them to let it work on their behalf. This is Jira’s own panel, shown once per person.

A later version may ask your site for a new permission. Until an administrator approves it, the part that needs it shows “This part is waiting for a Jira administrator’s approval”. Everything else keeps working. Approve the request in Jira’s Connected apps.
