Advanced Filters & Gadgets sits on top of Jira, so a few words mean something specific here. This page is the short version of all of them.

i
The one distinction worth learning first: a Jira filter is Jira’s own saved search and decides which work items come in. An advanced filter is what this app adds on top, and decides how they’re presented.

The two filters #

TermWhat it means
Jira filterA saved search in Jira, owned and shared in Jira. It decides which work items an advanced filter reports on. This app never changes it and never widens who can use it.
Advanced filterThe reusable reporting layer you build on top of one Jira filter — controls, metrics, views and queues. Gadgets read it, so editing it once changes every dashboard using it.
Filter libraryThe list at Apps → Advanced Filters showing every advanced filter you administer or are allowed to use.

Controls — what your viewers click #

These live in the Filtering section of an advanced filter and appear on the dashboard in the Controller.

TermWhat it meansExample
Quick filterA one-click toggle you define with a piece of JQL. Applies immediately.“Blockers only”
Field controlA dropdown on a Jira field. You name the field; the app picks the right selector.A Component picker
Smart ruleOne question with up to ten named answers, each with its own JQL. Gadgets can filter, group and color by it.“Health: On track / At risk / Stalled”
PresetA saved combination of applied controls. Personal to each viewer.“My team, this sprint”
How … matchesThe box on a multi-value control that decides how its chosen values combine: Any of these, All of these where allowed, or None of these.“Any of these: Bug, Incident”
No valueAn extra alternative offered alongside the values themselves, matching work items where the field is empty.“Any of these: High — or No value”

Metrics — the numbers #

These live in the Metrics section and are what counters, gauges and charts display.

TermWhat it meansExample
ValueA single number: a work item count, a field roll-up, or a duration.Open bugs
RatioOne value measured against another, shown as a percentage or decimal.% resolved
Time seriesA value bucketed by a date — one line on a chart.Work items created per week
Contributor JQLAn optional filter on which work items contribute to a value, without changing the set it’s reported over.Completed points as a share of the whole sprint

Presentation — how results look #

TermWhat it means
ViewA set of columns — what appears in a Results table, in what order and how wide. Can also draw a Gantt timeline.
QueueA saved slice of work with its own JQL and ordering, like “Escalations, most urgent first”.

On the dashboard #

TermWhat it means
GadgetOne of the thirteen panels this app adds to Jira’s Add gadget panel, each named “Advanced Filter …”.
ControllerThe toolbar gadget. Filters every gadget on the dashboard that uses the same advanced filter.
Applied stateWhatever controls are currently switched on. It belongs to the dashboard, not to any one gadget — which is why they all move together.
Working queryOptional JQL set on a single gadget, narrowing just that one on top of the advanced filter.
DrilldownClicking a number, bar or cell to open the work items behind it in Jira’s issue navigator.

Administration #

TermWhat it means
Administrator of a filterSomeone who can edit one advanced filter’s configuration. Not the same as a Jira admin, and it does not let them see work items.
GrantOne of the four site-wide permissions in Access policies: create filters, manage all filters, run bulk operations, export usage and backups.
Archived filterA filter hidden from the main list but still working on dashboards. Still counts toward the site limit; only deleting frees a slot.
“Administrator” is the word most likely to trip people up. Administering an advanced filter lets you change how it reports. Seeing the work items still depends on Jira sharing the underlying Jira filter with you — see Sharing the Jira filter your viewers need.
